Happy Computing Tip #100
The Importance of Backups
By Switch, the I.T. Support Robot
You’re working on a big project for your company. Everything is going fine and your almost done when it happens. BOOM! BANG! CRASH! A thunderstorm hits and a power outage occurs. Everything shuts down. Thankfully you saved your work. However, when the power comes back on, your project is gone. Don’t let this happen! Backups can store all the information on your computer so if anything happens to it, you can recover all your files.
Onsite backups are stored on a local storage device such as a hard drive. You always have access to your data and internet access is not needed. However, if your building caught on fire, the hard drive could be destroyed, which is why it’s important to also have offsite backups.
Offsite backups are stored on servers in the cloud. You can access your files any time as long as you have an internet connection. If something ever happens to your place of business (e.g. fire, flood, etc.), your data is safe. Plus, you can access your data from home, another office or anywhere else.
Why It’s Important
As mentioned earlier, backups are extremely important. All your data can be saved by having both onsite and offsite backups. If you don’t have backups in place, we very strongly recommend doing so as soon as possible. You will sleep much better, knowing that your critically important business information is safe – no matter what life throws at you.
